The automotive industry has been adopting green practices to benefit through long-term cost savings, brand enhancement and better regulatory compliance and to attract talent and higher investor interest. Still, it is necessary for the industry to make more investments in green technologies, said Dr. K. Karthikeyan, Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board.

Addressing a conference on ‘Green Technologies for Automotive Sector’, with the theme ‘Innovative models for profitability and sustainability’, organised by the Tamil Nadu Technology Development & Promotion Center of CII, he said investment in green technologies for the automotive sector will have a good impact on the urban air quality, and sought industry support for the enforcement of the environmental norms.

Studies have shown that the automotive industry contributed to various modes of pollution, both at the user level and at the source of manufacturing. About 90 per cent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the life cycle of the vehicle happen at the stage of usage and the rest 10 per cent at the manufacturing side, he added.

Mr. Atul Renavikar, Conference Chairman and Director, Michelin India Manufacturing Plant, said: “Green manufacturing differed from traditional manufacturing as it focused on environmental impact, environment policies of the government and national and international environmental agencies. Green innovation would actually decrease cost and increase productivity and make companies more competitive.

Earlier, in his welcome address, Mr. S.N. Eisenhower, Vice Chairman, CII Tamil Nadu, and Director – Operations, Saint-Gobain Glass India, said to optimize the growth of the automobile industry it has to identify technologies, solutions, systems and strategic models. Green initiatives have been taking shape with the automotive and component industries as adopting green practices would benefit through long-term cost savings, brand enhancement, better regulatory compliance and attracting talent and higher investor interest.

Dr. Mariazeena Johnson, Director, Sathyabama University, proposed creation of a technical community to discuss how the automotive industry could evaluate green ideas and select more environment-friendly ways to produce and sell vehicles globally.
