The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organised a conference on Tamil Nadu Manufacturing in Chennai on November 15 in which the importance of digital manufacturing was highlighted by experts.
Mr. Vikram Kapur, Principal Secretary – Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu, in his keynote address, exuded confidence that the business sentiment in the State is “robust” with challenges. The State remains one of the major manufacturing hubs attracting huge investments from various sectors including automotive.
He also emphatically stated that Tamil Nadu has the potential and ability to be recognized as the most preferred manufacturing business-friendly State in the country. The journey of smart manufacturing will make the industry smarter, and this must be seen in the context of Tamil Nadu always being a pioneer in innovative ideas.
Skill development
Referring to skill development, Mr. Kapur said the Centre and the State should take steps to address this issue. There is a need to take a look at the curriculum in educational institutions and delivery system in companies to ensure that workers understand how digital manufacturing works. There are a lot of opportunities in this era of digitalization, as it generates an enormous amount of data which can be used to analyse the current system and re-engineer the process and expand markets.
