CII’s Green Mobility Expo 2017 to cover topical issues

Global warming and energy security are two key drivers of green mobility across the globe. With advancements in automobile technology, green mobility (electric / hybrid, CNG / bio fuel / alternate fuel vehicles) have gained momentum as a viable alternative to conventional powertrains. It is evident, the green mobility is the way forward towards sustainable transportation.

Green mobility covers those modes of transportation that generate low or zero CO2 emissions, make as less noise as possible, and put lesser load on scarce resources and infrastructure – any mode that fundamentally emits less carbon may qualify. As green mobility is an essential part for green growth and quality of life, extensive measures are needed to ensure improved mobility and growth conditions for the business sector, while also improving the environment and reducing CO2 emission.

This assumes greater significance in view of Government of India signing the UN Framework Convention Climate Change (UNFCC) at the 21st meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) in April 2016. Government of India has initiated a number of action plans for various sectors of the industry to reduce the levels of pollution in the environment by adopting latest technologies in manufacturing and other day to day services.

One of the major initiatives for the automobile sector, in this context is the adoption of National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP 2020), under which the Government of India outlined various measures to encourage green mobility. NEMMP 2020 forecasts a potential of 5-7 Million Hybrid and Electric vehicle in India by 2020, with a planned Government support of Rs. 13,000 – 14,000 crores, resulting in 9500 M litre liquid fuel savings and 24 M Ton CO2 reduction.

Under this mission, a scheme for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid & Electric vehicles (FAME India) has been launched in 2015. The scheme is expected to support the mission until the year 2020. The Central Government, as a contribution to lead by example, is encouraging all its departments and State Governments to support the initiatives by using hybrid and electric vehicles for official transportation needs. Furthermore, several states offer reduced State taxes and registration charges on these vehicles. It is heartening to know that about 78,000 hybrid and electric vehicles have been sold in India within 1 year of launch of FAME India Scheme.

The e-vehicle market in India has a huge potential for growth. With impetus from the government in terms of making strategic policies, announcements and allocating funds, the vision to produce nearly six to seven million electric vehicles units, both four wheelers and two wheelers in India by 2020 can be fulfilled.

Against this backdrop, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) took the initiative to organise the 1st International Green Mobility Expo (GMX) 2015, which included conference and exposition, with a view to provide a neutral platform to the stakeholders of this sector to come together and initiate dialogues to create a sustainable Green Mobility Solution for India. The first event was well represented by participation of key manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Renault, Toyota Kirloskar, Hero Electric, Kinetic Motors, Lohia Auto, etc., amongst other players from this sector, showcasing the latest offerings for green mobility.

The second edition of International Green Mobility Expo (GMX) 2017, scheduled to be held from February 2 to 4, 2017 at New Delhi, aims to showcase all Green Mobility technology vehicles and components. This time besides electric vehicles, attention is being given to alternate fuel vehicles / technologies based on CNG, bio fuel and hydrogen fuel cell. CNG vehicles, which form an important part in reducing CO2 emissions, has not been able to realize its full potential due to lack of infrastructure. The forum aims to create awareness and bring all stakeholders together to discuss the way forward for a sustainable green transportation in India.

GMX 2017 is supported by the Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy, Government of India; Delhi Government; Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV); Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) and Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA).

GMX 2017 will help in showcasing technologies, create awareness and bring stakeholders from industry and government together for discussing feasibility of adopting various alternate fuel technologies in the Indian context and addressing various issues related to implementation & infrastructure requirement, etc. OEM’s, component makers, technology providers, research institutions and policy makers are urged to come forward and participate in GMX 2017 and be a part of the green mobility revolution in India.
