Cummins announces new global heavy-duty engine platform

Cummins has confirmed its plans for the new global heavy-duty engine, the G Series. This is an in-line six-cylinder platform that will be available in 10.5 and 11.8 litre displacements for a broad variety of onhighway requirements, including buses and coaches.

Mr. Neil Pattison, Director – Automotive Engine Business for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Cummins, said: “The G Series minimises Cummins-NeilPattisonengineering requirements for our vehicle manufacturer customers with a compact installation envelope. Its global design uses architecture which can be easily adapted to meet the unique performance and cost of ownership expectations for a number of markets and regions. At launch in 2014, it will meet Euro 3 and Euro 4 emissions levels. Engines for Euro 5, Euro 6 and U.S. EPA regulations are also under development.”

The G Series heavy-duty platform will be introduced as the Cummins ISG11 and Cummins ISG12 engines. They will offer a power range from 290 hp to 512 hp (216 to 382 kW) in a compact and lightweight package.

Significant weight savings have been achieved in order to increase the power-to-weight ratio. A sculptured block retains high rigidity while removing the unnecessary mass. The use of composite material for the oil pan and valve cover provides further weight savings. With this innovative approach, the G Series achieves a remarkably low engine weight of just 862 kg while retaining all the structural strength and durability expected of a Cummins heavy-duty engine.

The G Series incorporates Cummins Xtra-High Pressure Injection (XPI) fuel system. With multiple injection events driven by high-Cummins-ISG12FuelSideprecision Cummins electronic controls, the XPI fuel system contributes to a very impressive peak torque for the G Series of 2305 Nm, together with a torque rise as high as 60 per cent available. These attributes enable the G Series to deliver exceptionally fast response to increasing load factors from low engine rpm.

The G Series will initially be manufactured at the Beijing Foton Cummins Engine Co., serving customers on a global basis. Production will start in the first half of 2014.

Scania to use Cummins ISB for Euro VI

Cummins has announced that the latest ISB6.7 engines will be supplied to Scania for use in its Euro 6 buses. Displayed on the Cummins Cummind-ISB6-7Euro-6stand at Busworld, the 6-cylinder 6.7 litre ISB engine is available up to 310 ps for a range of ultra low-emission public transport solutions. Peak torque is at high level of 1100 Nm, making it ideal for tough city bus duty cycles.

Mr. Neil Pattison, Director – Automotive Engine Business for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Cummins, said: “Cummins and Scania have a long-standing partnership developing and manufacturing high-pressure fuel systems for the latest low-emission engines. Our components division has also been supplying turbochargers and filtration components to them for a number of years. This is the first time Scania has specified Cummins engines, and we are delighted to be able to supply our Euro 6 ISB engines for their latest city buses.”

For Euro 6 the ISB6.7 comes with the proven engine technologies of cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbocharging (VGT). The engine technologies are matched to the aftertreatment system, designed and manufactured by Cummins Emission Solutions, combining a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) to meet the ultra-low levels of emissions.

“The ISB has built an excellent reputation in bus applications since its introduction for Euro 3. It has become the engine of choice for many vehicle manufacturers in this market based on its durability, performance and efficiency. Backed by our technical support capabilities, we have helped OEMs deliver high-quality installations”, Mr. Pattison said.

“For Euro 6, we made our product announcement early to alert the market of our proven technology choice. This has given our customers the confidence to move to Euro 6 with us, and positioned us to win new opportunities like this one with Scania,” he added.
