Eicher Enters SCV Segment with Pro X: A Game-Changer in Last-Mile Logistics

VE Commercial Vehicles (VECV), a joint venture between Volvo Group and Eicher Motors, has taken a significant step forward in the small commercial vehicle (SCV) segment with the launch of the Eicher Pro X series. This marks the company’s entry into the 2-3.5 tonne category, a rapidly growing segment crucial to last-mile logistics. The Pro X series, an electric-first offering, embodies Eicher’s commitment to sustainability, advanced technology, and customer-centric innovation. Showcased at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, the Pro X is set to transform intra-city logistics with its efficiency, smart features, and seamless adaptability to multiple powertrains.

Strategic Expansion into SCVs

VECV’s entry into the SCV market is a strategic move aligned with the growing demand for efficient urban transportation solutions. Vinod Aggarwal, MD and CEO, VECV, emphasized the company’s vision: “At VECV, we are committed to delivering modern and sustainable solutions to Indian commercial vehicle customers. The Bharat Mobility Expo provides a platform to showcase our leadership in meeting the evolving needs of our customers. Our trucks and buses, backed by our Uptime promise, deliver sustainable and efficient transport systems critical to India’s growth trajectory.”

The SCV market, particularly in the 2-3.5T GVW category, is witnessing rapid expansion driven by e-commerce, FMCG, and courier services. “The Eicher Pro X charts a new path into the Small Commercial Vehicle segment. It is an embodiment of Eicher’s brand philosophy, ‘Nayi Soch, Naye Raaste.’ As India progresses on its ‘Viksit Bharat’ journey, the SCV segment will play a vital role, and the Pro X will drive transformation in last-mile logistics,” added Aggarwal.

Customer-Centric Design and Innovation

The Pro X series has been meticulously designed based on extensive customer research. Sachin Agrawal, Executive VP & Head of Product Development at VECV, explained, “We engaged with over 1,000 customers and gathered more than 3,000 unique insights, transforming them into technical specifications using Quality Function Deployment (QFD).”

Built on a modular platform, the Pro X supports multiple applications, including refrigerated transport, parcel delivery, and white goods transportation. It integrates 93 patented innovations, ensuring superior driver comfort, safety, and operational efficiency. “The flat-floor cabin allows easy movement, enabling drivers to lie down and rest. The truck is also equipped with a Driver State Monitoring System (DSMS) and front-facing collision warning cameras, enhancing road safety,” Agrawal added.

The Pro X optimizes energy efficiency through automated drive mode selection, switching seamlessly between power and eco modes. “With an energy efficiency of 93-94%, the Pro X is at least 10% more efficient than existing products in the market,” Agrawal revealed. Additionally, the E-axle configuration eliminates the need for a propeller shaft, maximizing energy utilization.

Market Opportunity and Business Strategy

Eicher’s entry into the SCV space is backed by a strong market strategy. Abhishek Chaudhary, Senior Vice President – SCVs, VE Commercial Vehicles, highlighted, “The SCV market is estimated at 330,000 to 340,000 units annually, growing at a CAGR of 6-7%. Our co-creation approach ensures our product is designed with real customer needs in mind.”

Positioning itself uniquely in the SCV space, Eicher has leveraged its legacy in LMD trucks. “Customers trust Eicher for innovation and reliability. Our confidence in the Pro X stems from our deep-rooted expertise in the commercial vehicle space,” Chaudhary added.

Advanced Manufacturing for a Future-Ready Fleet

The Pro X is manufactured at VECV’s cutting-edge facility in Bhopal, designed with Industry 4.0 principles. B. Srinivas, Chief Operating Officer, VECV, explained, “This greenfield plant provided an opportunity to integrate best practices from the outset. It is designed to accommodate diesel, CNG, and electric vehicle production, ensuring flexibility for future transitions.”

With an initial capacity of 40,000 units, scalable to 80,000, the plant operates on a just-in-sequence (JIS) inventory model, optimizing supply chain efficiency. “Unlike traditional JIT manufacturing, JIS synchronizes supplier production schedules with our assembly lines, ensuring cost-effectiveness and streamlined production,” Srinivas noted.

A standout feature of the Bhopal facility is its emphasis on gender diversity. “The assembly line for the Eicher Pro X series is managed entirely by women, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity. These women bring an unmatched level of precision and care to the production process,” he added.

Technology-Driven Efficiency and Uptime Support

Understanding the evolving priorities of fleet operators, VECV has integrated advanced connected solutions in the Pro X series. S.S. Gill, Chief Commercial Officer, VE Commercial Vehicles, emphasized, “Total cost of ownership (TCO) is a key focus for fleet operators. Beyond the purchase price, uptime, fuel efficiency, and real-time vehicle monitoring play a major role in profitability.”

All BS6 vehicles from VECV come equipped with the MyEicher app and Eicher Live solutions, providing real-time diagnostics and fleet tracking. “We launched India’s first industry uptime center five years ago, enabling fleet owners to monitor vehicle performance and minimize downtime,” Gill stated. The firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) feature allows remote software updates, reducing the need for physical service visits.

Future-Ready for Multiple Fuel Options

While Eicher has debuted with an electric-first strategy, the Pro X platform is designed to accommodate diesel and CNG variants effortlessly. “One fuel cannot be the solution for the entire industry. We are starting with electric, but in due course, CNG and diesel variants will follow,” Chaudhary noted. The flexible powertrain architecture ensures seamless integration of alternative fuels, making the Pro X adaptable to market needs.

The Bhopal plant’s modular assembly line further reinforces this adaptability. “Our production facility allows us to manufacture different powertrains on the same line, ensuring we are future-proofed for evolving fuel trends,” Srinivas explained.

With the launch of the Eicher Pro X series, VE Commercial Vehicles is set to redefine last-mile logistics in India. By combining sustainability, innovation, and customer-centric design, the Pro X emerges as a game-changer in the SCV segment.

Gill summed it up: “The Pro X series embodies Eicher’s innovation, customer-centric development, and advanced technology, making it the ideal choice for modern urban logistics. With best-in-class range efficiency, fully connected solutions, and smart features, we aim to empower logistics experts with a truly expert vehicle.”

As VECV takes this new offering to market, it cements its position as a leader in India’s commercial vehicle industry, paving the way for a more connected, efficient, and sustainable future.
