Unlike traditional models where buses are acquired without specific safety benchmarks, VIBGYOR meticulously selects vehicles based on stringent requirements. “When we place an order, we don’t just ask for a bus—we specify exact requirements,” Pannu emphasizes.
Eicher’s school buses feature reverse cameras for safer maneuvering—adopted by VIBGYOR well before industry norms. “A blind spot can be fatal. Our buses eliminate risks to ensure maximum student protection,” he adds. The 2×2 seating configuration adheres strictly to government norms, preventing overcrowding and ensuring comfort.
VIBGYOR’s buses are equipped with CCTV cameras, a dedicated lady attendant, and strict boarding protocols, ensuring a staff member remains onboard until the last child is dropped off. “Our proprietary app provides real-time updates, allowing parents to track their child’s journey. Scratch-free flooring, fire-retardant seats, and onboard fire extinguishers further enhance safety,” says Pannu.
Eicher supports a structured training program for drivers, reinforcing best practices in defensive driving, fuel efficiency, and student safety. This approach ensures compliance with regulations and fosters a culture of responsibility.
Managing Operations with Precision
While many schools rely on third-party transport operators, VIBGYOR opted for in-house management. “Initially, we outsourced transport but realized contractors couldn’t match our vision of safety and quality,” Pannu explains.
A dedicated senior VP and a ten-member team oversee maintenance, guidelines, and driver training. “Unlike traditional setups where transport executives report to the principal, our structured system ensures efficiency,” he adds.
Eicher’s role in this structured approach is crucial. With an Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC), Eicher ensures VIBGYOR’s fleet remains in top condition. “Our vendors track service schedules and proactively remind us, minimizing downtime and maximizing efficiency,” says Pannu. The buses typically cover 60-80 km daily, with a 45-minute downtime per trip for seamless operations. Preventive maintenance is meticulously planned, with servicing completed within 10-11 months instead of a full year.
Operating in dense urban environments presents unique challenges like frequent braking and clutch wear. “City driving conditions demand top-notch vehicle upkeep. Clutch wear, a non-issue on highways, is critical here. Eicher’s buses are designed for durability, with enhanced braking and optimized fuel efficiency. Their reliable service keeps our fleet in peak condition,” Pannu notes.
Enhancing Comfort with AC Buses & Future Vision
VIBGYOR prioritizes student comfort, with 40% of its fleet comprising air-conditioned buses—setting a new standard in school transport. Older non-AC buses are being retrofitted with AC units to ensure a comfortable ride, regardless of weather conditions.
A major challenge in school transportation is the prevalence of unregulated private vans and auto-rickshaws that lack proper safety measures. “Around 48% of students still use unregulated transport, compromising safety,” Pannu highlights. VIBGYOR collaborates with Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) to educate parents on the benefits of regulated school transport.
Looking ahead, VIBGYOR plans to introduce in-bus television, digital display boards, and nutritious snacks, enhancing the student experience. These additions will keep students engaged and provide healthy refreshments during commutes.
Since its inception in 2004, VIBGYOR has grown into a nationwide network driven by a progressive vision. “Education isn’t just academics; it includes safe and secure transportation,” Pannu affirms. VIBGYOR aims to extend its expertise to smaller schools seeking structured transport solutions. “While we don’t see this as a business, demand from smaller schools is growing. Our goal is to create a safer, more reliable transport ecosystem.”
