Scania presents its complete line-up of next-generation trucks at the IAA Show in Hanover. This is no ordinary week for truck suppliers like Scania, or any other operator or in the commercial vehicle sector for that matter. The reason: September 20 marked the opening of the week-long IAA Commercial Vehicles motor show, a key trade fair that is held every two years with an expected 250,000 visitors.
Ready with a whole range of next-generation vehicles, Scania is likely to make its presence felt, not least with the attractive L-series plug-in hybrid truck for urban distribution. Housed in Hall 12, all of the vehicles that are featured at Scania’s stand are run on alternative fuel. How better to demonstrate just how serious Scania is about leading the shift to sustainable transport?
On the long-haulage front, the remarkably fuel-saving R-series tractor is on display along with the V8 gem with the spacious S-series cab: already a favourite among drivers. Other highlights include: the 450 hp 8×4 from the versatile XT range, which is tailored for construction tasks; the L-series from Scania’s newly-launched urban range, with its unmatched visibility for challenging city traffic; the CrewCab fire truck; and a forestry truck. Meanwhile the full range of city, suburban and long-distance buses are on show, as well as the Scania Interlink: the first long-distance coach run on liquified natural gas.
Scania introduces world’s first gas-fuelled long-distance coach
At IAA, Scania premiers its new Interlink Medium Decker coach for liquefied gas (LNG) operations for a range of up to 1,000 kilometres. Scania hereby extends the broad range of alternative fuel options to sustainable intercity coach journeys.
“Whereas there are several options for carbon-conscious city and suburban bus operators, there have been fewer alternatives in long-distance travel market that we are now addressing. As LNG is becoming increasingly available throughout Europe, as well as in many other parts of the world, this is a timely and viable alternative” says Karin Rådström, Head of Buses and Coaches at Scania.
LNG operations have the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by 20 percent while also substantially reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate matter emissions. Additionally, noise levels are significantly lower. Some countries are also now starting to offer liquified biogas, cutting carbon emissions by 90 percent.
Sustainability is Scania’s guiding theme at IAA and the entire bus and coach line-up is operated on alternative fuels – from the Scania Citywide LE Suburban hybrid to the Scania Interlink High Decker for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).
Additionally, Scania showcases its battery electric Citywide Low Floor bus, which is presently in regular traffic in the northern Swedish city of Östersund. At IAA, visitors get the opportunity to experience the bus first-hand on an internal route in the Deutsche Messe trade fair area.
