India Japan Lighting Pvt. Ltd. (IJL), a 50:50 joint venture between Lucas-TVS Ltd., and Koito Manufacturing Company Ltd., Japan, who are world leaders in automotive lighting, was incorporated in 1997. The company manufactures headlamps, rear combination lamps and various other signal lamps for automotive applications from its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Chennai and Bawal in Haryana. It has also introduced clear plastic lens, multi-focal reflector headlamps with auto levelling mechanism and clear lens rear combination lamps.
During a recent interview with MOTORINDIA, Mr. B.S. Sivaraman, Head – Marketing, IJL, said: “With world class technology from Koito, we are able to provide best quality products with pricing at par with others. Our Chennai plant supplies 1,800 head lamps a day exclusively for Nissan. In the car segment, which accounts to 70 per cent of our total turnover, we are a major source of lighting equipments like head lamps and rear combination lamps (RCL) to Toyota, Tata Motors, Nissan and also export these products to Nissan’s projects in Mexico and Thailand through Nissan India.”
In the two-wheeler segment, which contributes to 10 per cent of IJL’s turnover, the company caters to Honda and Yamaha, and is also a single source supplier for head lamps to Daimler (Fuso) and Ashok Leyland (BOSS) trucks in the commercial vehicle segment, which accounts for the rest of its total sales.
Research & Development
The company has been trying to carve a niche for itself in the market with its 40-member research team focusing on developing new lighting solutions like the high intense LED (HILED), with a special focus on reduction of weight and power consumption. Lucas-TVS and Koito have been constantly supporting IJL with their world class technology and design. The company has undertaken a lot of cost-cutting measures in its manufacturing process, like direct aluminising by skipping base coat, concentrating on moulds and combining processes. As a result, new orders for its head and tail lamps have been bagged from Tata Motors, Honda and Nissan for their new facelift vehicles.
“We will achieve a sales turnover of Rs. 300 crores in 2013-14 and aim to reach Rs. 500 crores in the next couple of years. We have also received several awards of recognitions from our OE customers for development of faster design”, added Mr. Sivaraman.
