The 2017 Spectrum Conference on ‘Supply Chain for Industry 4.0 – Shaping the Future of India’ was organized by the Chennai chapter of the Indian Institute of Material Management (IIMM) recently in Chennai.
Mr. N. Swayambu, Conference Chairman, in his opening remarks, said that Industry 4.0 was chosen as the topic keeping in mind the latest developments in the field of digitalization and the way the Industry has absorbed the same. He added that the topic revolves around focus on digital supply chain and the changes in supply chain mechanism that would pave the way for a faster and much more efficient supply chain with high levels of scalability, making it more in sync with the needs of the industry. Other areas like e-commerce, cashless economy post-demonetization, integrated multi-modal logistics and GST also connect well with the topic, opined the Conference Chair.
While Mr. PY. Venkateswaran, IIMM Branch Chairman, welcomed the audience with an address, Mr. TAB. Bharathi, Spectrum Convenor took over the compering role for the day. Mr. OP. Longia, National President, IIMM, New Delhi, shared that Chennai tops the IIMM members’ list with 450 Corporate Members and touched upon the Institute’s approach on various areas like Industry 4.0, IoT, cloud computing, cyber-crime, ease of doing business, etc.
Prof. L.S. Ganesh of IIT Madras, Management Studies, said in his inaugural address that now in a technology-centric competition, India must raise the bar higher to reach greater heights and that massive and flexible customization in manufacturing would be able to drive growth.
Mr. Kunal Goyal, Accenture, in his special address, shared some staggering figures: we will see a 30-fold increase in connectivity by 2020, 50 million connected machines by 2019, 40 per cent of products under embedded sensors, $41 billion industrial robot by 2020, 14 per cent population working on cloud computers and other digital technology.
Mr. Abhishek Singh, Head – Industry 4.0, Robert Bosch, delivered a special address, while Mr. Suresh Kumar, Sr. Director – Southern Region, DB Schenker, in his special address, highlighted the role of logistics towards the country’s GDP growth.
