This year’s summit, hosted in Bengaluru, had a galaxy of experts from the manufacturing sector sharing their insights on how manufacturing efficiencies can be taken to the next level
The 13th edition of National Productivity Summit (NPS 2019) was held on August 20-21 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), Bengaluru. The summit featured pre-event plant visits, keynote addresses, case study presentations and productivity championship awards. NPS 2019 attracted over 300 delegates from 130 companies. The summit was inaugurated by Bhaskar Bhat, Managing Director, Titan Company Ltd., who, in his opening address, spoke on ‘Impact of Productivity on India’s Manufacturing Competitiveness’. At a special session for CEOs, T.V. Mohandas Pai, Chairman, Manipal Global Education, delivered his address on ‘Winning in the Digital World’.
The National Productivity Summit is held to champion the cause of productivity and enhancing competitiveness in Indian manufacturing. It is organised by IMTMA, the apex body and single point of contact for the machine tool industry in India. The event showcases best practices in manufacturing through enriching keynotes, live case study presentations, plant visits, success stories, and so on. The summit brings out why companies should embrace an integrated approach to increase manufacturing productivity, and how to prepare their people, processes and technology as part of this journey of productivity excellence.
This year’s edition featured three keynote speakers: G. Parthipan, CEO, Rane TRW Steering Systems, spoke on the topic ‘Adopting Modern Manufacturing Technology to Enhance Productivity’; Dr. Babu Padmanabhan, Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer, Steer Engineering, spoke on ‘Innovation as a Powerful Tool to Enhance Productivity’; and Sandeep Kumar Maini, Chairman, Maini Group, delivered a address on ‘Thriving in the Era of Disruption – How Organisations Stay Afloat’. This year the NPS received over 150 case studies from which 11 were shortlisted. Eight large companies, namely, Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing, Carborundum Universal, Bosch, Rane TRW Steering Systems, SAAB Engineering, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., and Mahindra & Mahindra, presented their case studies.
The summit also featured case study presentations from three SMEs – Gala Precision Engineering, Khutale Engineering and UCAM. All these companies contested for the IMTMA-ACE Micromatic Productivity Championship Awards 2019, the winners of which were as follows:
- First prize went to Mahindra & Mahindra for ‘Reduction of Specific Carbon Footprint by Using Waste to Wealth, TPM and Industry 4.0 Concept in the Utility Management Area.’
- Second prize went to Bosch Ltd. for ‘Innovative Approach using Mould Flow Analysis for Productivity Improvement in Common Rail Pump Housing’.
- Third prize went to Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing for ‘Use of Industry 4.0 in Manufacturing for Resource Utilisation and Reducing Conversion Cost’.
The SME Productivity Award 2019 was won by Khutale Engineering for ‘Learn and Green Approach to Layout Planning’. Pre-summit plant visits were organised to Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor Company, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, Volvo Trucks, Dynamatic Technologies, and Volvo Construction Equipment which provided a unique opportunity to witness some of the best productivity improvement projects being translated into action. The 14th edition of National Productivity Summit has been scheduled to be held in August 2020 at Pune.
