The new venture, named IPL Shaw Solutions, combines Shaw Development’s global manufacturing, research and development expertise in advanced fluid management technologies with IPL’s leading manufacturing expertise and market presence
There’s a growing trend to localise emission-related components and technologies in India, triggered by the implementation of BS-VI in the country. To tap new opportunities in this space, India Pistons Ltd. (IPL), a subsidiary of the USD 2 billion Amalgamations Group, had announced earlier this year that it has entered into a joint venture (JV) with Florida-based Shaw Development LLC to manufacture reliable and cost-effective DEF solutions for heavy-duty commercial and off-road vehicles and diesel engine manufacturers. The new venture, named IPL Shaw Solutions, combines Shaw Development’s global manufacturing, research and development expertise in advanced fluid management technologies with IPL’s leading application engineering expertise and market presence.
It will also be a part of the ‘Make in India’ strategy for a better environment with a mandate of self-reliant India. With an investment of Rs 50 crore, IPL Shaw solutions has set up a manufacturing plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu with an annual capacity of 5 lakh DEF systems per annum. The plant will be operational from November 2021. The product line will be designed and manufactured to meet the stringent BS-VI, TREM IV, TREM V, CEV IV and CEV V exhaust emission norms. This also would enable the OEMs to meet CAFE 2 norms, as SCR systems would help improve engine fuel economy.
To start with, IPL Shaw solutions will manufacture DEF modules with global standard tank volume options (11, 19, 38, 57, 95 litres), application-specific customised tank sizes and patented multi-function header unit with tri-function sensor (urea quality, temp, level sensors). However, the shapes and capacities of the reservoir are customisable as per specific requirements. “Our global research and development and local engineering expertise will enable us to support the customers from concept to launch,” the company said. Apart from the DEF modules, it will also offer DEF accessories including inline DEF filtration units, tank adaptors, caps and strainers. With this IPL Shaw solutions will be a one-stop solution for DEF systems for all its customers.
Meenakshi Sundaram, CEO, IPL Shaw India, further added that customer-oriented, proven products with local manufacturing capability envisaging global flawless concept to launch model will bring much-needed self-reliance in the area of DEF solutions. “It will further lead to create India-specific cost-effective solutions as we go further,” he said. Shaw Development’s capability on sensor technology and product validation labs will add to system durability and reliability. “We also focus on contamination handling, high heat-capable, application-specific solutions for the on-highway, off-highway, agricultural and power generation units,” Meenakshi shared.
Commenting on this development, Gautam Venkataramani, Director, IPL Shaw Solutions India, said, “India Pistons Limited’s customer experience, local manufacturing strength over 60+ years with research and development and application engineering expertise will be used to provide DEF system solutions with light-weighting, performance-oriented approach leading to CAFE focus.”
