KPIT Technologies, an India-based global technology firm is the winner of ITF’s “Promising Innovation in Transport Award” 2016. The technology developed by KPIT allows the conversion of new or existing diesel buses into full electric buses. Different vehicles types from mini to 12-metre large buses can be retrofitted thanks to the modular and versatile technology.
“Air pollution and traffic congestion are major issues for Indian cities today. This technology could reduce pollution in India and beyond. It also has the potential to lower congestion by making public transport more attractive. Not least, it can cut carbon emissions and contribute to the global effort to limit climate change” said José Viegas, Secretary-General of the International Transport Forum and chairman of the jury.
Replacing 5 000 diesel buses in Indian cities with electric buses would translate into a reduction of 2,38,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. Not only that these buses are environmentally-friendly, but they are more comfortable then the diesel ones as well.
Mr. Kishor Patil, Managing Director and CEO of KPIT said, “It is an honour to receive this recognition from a world renowned institution like the International Transport Forum. It encourages us to continue our efforts to create technologies that are environmentally friendly and cost effective. Our smart electric bus technology will enable green, intelligent and affordable public transportation.”
The ITF Promising Transport Innovation Award recognises an innovation that has the potential to significantly improve the quality, performance, user experience, accessibility, sustainability or intermodality of the transport offer, for the movement of people and goods across one or more of the transport modes or through the reduction or elimination of travel.
KPIT Technologies is also a valuable member of the IRU initiated All India Smart Move High Level Group that is currently working on finding solutions to the challenges the bus, coach and taxi sectors are facing in India.
