Mazak of Japan is one of the world’s leading suppliers of CNC lathes, machining centres and manufacturing systems. The Indian operations of the company started in 1998 as part of the Mazak Singapore. Headquartered in Pune, the Indian company has its plant at Chinchwad. In 2008 Mazak became an wholly-owned subsidiary of the Mazak Group.
Discussing in detail the style of operations in India, Mr. S. Ravishankar, Dy. Managing Director, Mazak India, told MOTORINDIA that the company has been directly selling imported machines from Japan in order to maintain world class quality. It set up its own technology centre in 2011, which has now 15 machines, and spareparts, on-line support and engineering centres for providing turnkey solutions, as well as a unique spindle repair facility.
According to Mr. Ravishankar, with competition hotting up in the machine tool industry, it is always necessary to develop products and functions that provide incomparable operator support for ease of operation and optimum machine efficiency. Mazak remains committed to develop most innovative and advanced machine tools. Currently 200 different models of Mazak turning centres, vertical and horizontal machining centres, multi-tasking machining centres and 5-axis machining centres, laser machines and automation software are available to deliver enhanced manufacturing productivity and outstanding reliability. From the largest integrated manufacturing operations to the one-man job shop, the company has the right machine tool solution for all.
Mr. Ravishankar further said: “In India, we have four offices – Ahmedabad, Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore to provide efficient sales and service to our esteemed customers. We also offer extensive training programs in operation and programming and machine maintenance for all our customers. Though we focus on general purpose machines, we offer vertical machining centres and horizontal machining centres starting of 400 to 1.2 m palette size, turning, milling, etc., can be done in one shot in our multi-tasking machines. These machines are used specially in the auto components, oil & gas, and power plant equipment industries”.
Mazak has its presence across the globe. It has 10 manufacturing units, one each in the US, the UK and Singapore, two in China and five plants in Japan. Its Japanese factory makes laser cutting machines suited for the sheet metal industry. One of the Japanese plant is constructed 12m below the ground to save the environment. Over 7,500 people work for the Mazak Group, of which nearly 105 work in the Indian offices.
India being a price-conscious market and since Mazak’s products are rightly priced, the company finds it a profitable destination. The company has already installed 2,500 machines in India to its 700-odd customers such as Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, VECV, Cummins, John Deere, TVS and Sundram Fasteners.
