Established in 1982, Mecolam Engineering began its journey by supplying electrical and electronic parts to various industries. Gradually, the company moved on to manufacture fibreglass products and supply them to the Defence sector in a big way initially. Later, the company saw huge potential in the automotive industry, and today it supplies parts, including dash boards, front and back facia, bumpers and engine hoods, to major auto OEMs.
Mr. Binz Mathew, Director, said: “We manufacture hand lay-up, vacuum infusion and LRTM fibreglass parts to suit our customer requirements. We have a manufacturing set-up in Bangalore and our capacity is almost 25 buses a day. Our in-house facility to inspect the input material to finished part ensures best quality of each product. We maintain our molds which is key to making consistently good quality products. Our USP is also that we supply on time.”
Mr. Mathew shared that taking care of the FRP moulds, speaking to their customers about their requirements about the fitment of the products even before they are developed and ensuring quality from the beginning to the final stages is crucial to the robustness of their business.
Mecolam has the ability to manufacture both FR and non-FR grade exterior and interior bus panels. As an ISO 9001:2008 and IATF 16949:2016 certified company, it believes that it is able to hold its ground since inception. “We are always available for our customers. Even before we start a project with a client, we look at the final finish of the part that the client seeks. That’s where the differentiation lies for us,” he added.
Referring to competition, he disclosed: “Though we are seeing many more players entering this segment nowadays we are yet to see regularization and standardization of methods and processes. The lack of it leaves the field open for unorganized players to thrive. Another point is that only a few clients ask for certifications, which again encourages the grey market to grow.”
Mecolam is equipped to produce fibreglass products in high volumes owing to its strong infrastructure with trained manpower.
