At the IAA Transportation 2024 in Hannover, National Engineering Industries (NBC Bearings), an Indian manufacturer of premium bearings for the European tractor and trailer markets, showcased its progress and commitment to sustainability. “We’ve been in Europe for over 15 years now, and each year brings new standards that drive us to refine our practices,” said Rajesh Premchandran, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at NBC Bearings, while discussing with Rajesh Rajgor
He highlighted that European client, aware of NBC’s long-standing quality, increasingly seek to collaborate with Indian suppliers for both the cost advantages and sustainable manufacturing practices. “Indian companies have stepped up in sustainability, not only in products but across governance practices. This shift gives us a significant edge,” he noted. With the Indian market expanding, Rajesh believes that more European firms are keen to partner with NBC to meet their local requirements and benefit from cost efficiencies.
One of the standouts demands from European customers is for rigorous customization and high-quality standards. “Europe sets the bar high in terms of materials, low-torque bearings, and finish,” Rajesh shared. This demand has, in turn, allowed NBC to improve its products for the Indian market as well. Reflecting on NBC’s evolution, he added, “Standards in Europe keep us on our toes and ensure that we continue to raise our quality across all markets, not just internationally.”
In alignment with global carbon neutrality goals, NBC Bearings has also implemented measures to boost product durability and minimize friction. “Our journey to sustainability is ongoing,” Rajesh remarked. “However, with steel making up 76% of a bearing, we rely on green steel to complete the cycle. It’s a long path, one that requires cooperation with steel manufacturers to fully achieve.”
Exploring recent R&D developments, Rajesh highlighted NBC’s new research center in Germany, which supports their growth in the industrial segment. “Our German R&D team has helped us delve into material research and design improvements,” he explained. “This R&D presence allows us to advance from traditional bearing designs to more sophisticated options, benefiting both our automotive and industrial clients.” Rajesh emphasized that the technical insights gathered in Germany are a valuable asset for NBC’s strategy in Europe, enabling them to compete effectively across various sectors, including aerospace and railways.
Despite its growing success in Europe, NBC remains focused on seeding applications for OEMs before moving into the aftermarket segment. “Building our brand here takes time,” Rajesh stated. “The goal is to establish a reputation among OEMs, and once that’s solid, we can tackle the aftermarket segment.”
NBC’s future in Europe is marked by a strong sales and R&D team. “While we’re not disclosing exact numbers, the European market is a significant portion of our business. We aim to double that in the coming years,” Rajesh affirmed. As NBC secures clients like Dana and Volvo, it becomes easier to onboard other companies in their ecosystem.
Reflecting on NBC’s ambitions, Rajesh shared, “We’ve earned the right to supply Europe’s top companies after a decade of consistent quality. Now, we’re ready to serve more customers and become a top name in exports.” This clear vision, backed by cutting-edge R&D and sustainable practices, positions NBC Bearings as a key player in both the European and global bearing markets.
