Need to create benchmark in every sphere of manufacturing: Mashelkar

Innovation will positively play a key role in India’s accelerated growth. Many nations are aspiring to be most innovative since innovation is not only a part of technology in the manufacturing sector but also a rare combination of speed, scale and sustainability.

Speaking as the chief guest at CII’s Manufacturing Innovation Conclave held in New Delhi, Dr. Raghunath A. Mashelkar, President, Global Research Alliance, and Chairperson, National Innovation Foundation of India, stressed the need to create a benchmark in every sphere of manufacturing, while talent, technology and trust are the three key factors of innovation that would bring about a revolution in manufacturing areas as well as contribute to the country’s GDP growth. Innovation is not just an option but a vital factor to take the manufacturing sector to a higher level.

He also emphasized the need for creating a culture of risk taking and daring to try something new that would form the very basis for innovation in every organisation.

In his address, Mr. Kishore Jayaraman, Conclave Chairman, and President, India & South Asia, Rolls-Royce India, said that creation of an ecosystem contributing for business, industry, Government and academia is a basic mantra for innovation in the manufacturing sector. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ campaign is a predominant factor contributing to India’s GDP growth. Innovation would play a key role for the development of the manufacturing sector. This, coupled with the result-oriented policies, would create an opportunity for ensuring a level playing field.

Col. J.P. Uniyal, Director, Brahmos Aerospace Pvt. Ltd., said that innovation can be achieved in terms of financial, control & monitoring, public-private enterprises and product realisation. Fastest decision making systems and efficient monitoring and control are a perfect blend of an innovative approach.

Mr. Ambarish Raj, Senior Principal Consultant & Business Head, BMGI,the Knowledge Partner of the Conclave, said India is one of the fastest growing countries, and for creating a $10 trillion economy, the country will have to achieve a 9% CAGR over the next 20 years.

Mr. Pradeep S. David, General Manager, India, Universal Robots Pvt. Ltd., in his presentation, spoke about “Autonomation” which brings human working and robots together. With growing automation worldwide, robots play a crucial role in the manufacturing sector, including in the automotive industry. For instance, during 2015 a total of 2,500 robots were sold in India as compared to 75,000 in China.

Mr. Shankar Karnik, General Manager – Industrial, ExxonMobile Lubricants Pvt. Ltd., tracing the long journey of ExxonMobile, outlined the various innovations adopted while introducing a variety of lubricants. With 150 years of expertise, ExxonMobile is solely driven by technological innovation.

Mr. Gautam Dutta, Sr. Director, Siemens Industry Software, in his presentation, pointed out that innovation is the future and leading automotive companies like Maruti, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors always believe in the cutting-edge technology.

Mr. Kiran Deshmukh, Executive Vice Chairman, Sona Koyo Steering Systems Ltd., sharing the success story of Sona Koyo Steering Systems Ltd.

Mr. Kiran Deshmukh, Executive Vice Chairman, Sona Koyo Steering System, making a presentation on “the process of innovation in the manufacturing industry”, highlighted the success story of his company which is the largest steering system manufacturer in the country. With a workforce of 3,500 and seven manufacturing plants in India, every second car in the country is fitted with Sona steering system.

He also made a reference to the company’s innovative product of Electronic Power Assist Module (E-PAM) developed for off-highway vehicles.
