“New Mobility World logistics” presents topic of the future at IAA

During the 66th IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hannover to be held from September 22 to 29, 2016, the “New Mobility World logistics” will bring exhibitors and visitors together with a wide range of activities. The new format, intended to function as a multiplier for logistics and transport topics of the future, presents the five key themes: (1) Connected Vehicle, (2) Automated Driving, (3) Alternative Powertrains, (4) Urban Logistics and (5) Transport Services.

Visitors to the trade show can familiarize themselves with these topics in various ways. There will be presentations in the form of congresses with discussion forums and exhibitions, test drives in electric vehicles and demonstrations of products, services and applications in the “New Mobility World LIVE” demonstration area. Four themed guided tours are offered for the first time this year.

Congresses

An important component of the “New Mobility World logistics” is the congresses. High-ranking speakers will cover the major topics of the future in detail. Furthermore, these events will provide sufficient space for intensive exchange of ideas and views. There will be seven themed formats within the “New Mobility World logistics.”

Topic: Buses in local and long-distance transport – emissions-free, safe and connected

(Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, 10.00 – 13.00 h; Convention Center, Room 3B)

Every year, people in Germany use buses for a total of more than five billion journeys. This makes buses the second most important mode of passenger transport after passenger cars. In local public transport, buses are used for about half of all journeys and are therefore the number one means of transport in this segment. Buses form the backbone of public passenger transport, not only in Germany, but worldwide. The challenges of climate change require the development of new, emissions-free propulsion systems for buses, too.

Topic: Drones in logistics: “From Vision to Reality”

(Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, 13.00 – 18.00 h; Hall 19, Room New York 2)

The market for drones is growing rapidly. A new field of business is emerging, with a wide range of applications. Logistics companies around the world are testing drone-supported solutions for the last mile and for destinations that are difficult to reach using trucks. They are working intensively on solutions that will make deliveries faster and cut response times. Whereas today drones are generally controlled remotely by people on the ground, in the future artificial intelligence will increasingly take over assistance and automation functions.

Topic: Digitization in commercial vehicles

(Monday, Sept. 26, 2016, 16.00 – 19.00 h; Convention Center, Room 3A)

The increasing digitization of the global economy has far-reaching consequences for the future deployment of commercial vehicles. Integrating them into digital networks opens up novel opportunities in planning and control. Precision farming, platooning, partially automated driving and intelligent traffic guidance are just some of the buzzwords used to describe such developments. But at present the resulting options still face technical challenges and legal and organizational issues.

Topic: New Mobility World Lab16 – Startups meet Industry

(Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, 10.00 – 17.30 h; Hall 19, Room New York)

The first “Pitching Day” for business startups provides an opportunity for young companies to present its ideas and solutions at the IAA and make contact with the commercial vehicle industry.

Topic: 6th carIT Congress 2016 “The digital revolution in the automotive industry”

(Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, 09.00 – 20.00 h; Convention Center, Room 1)

The congress will focus on the topics of car-to-car communication, e-mobility and IT, infotainment systems including apps and their usability, autonomous driving, intelligent navigation, traffic management, driver assistance systems and the mobility of the future.

Topic: IAA congress “Urban logistics of the future”

(Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016, 10.00 – 15.00 h; Hall 19, Room New York)

Mobility and logistics are essential if urban spaces are to be both attractive and functional. And light commercial vehicles in particular are especially important. They deliver packages right up to the door, they serve the skilled trades as mobile workshops and they are used by providers of nursing care and many other services. Because they operate right where people are, they also directly influence the quality of life in towns and cities. They are therefore predestined to use alternative powertrains, for example for clean and quiet urban logistics. However, in addition we need to develop and implement intelligent concepts to make urban logistics as efficient as possible with the best solutions for urban areas.

Topic: IAA forum for automated and connected driving: “Commercial vehicles as innovation leaders in automation and connectivity”

(Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, 09.30 – 16.00 h; Hall 19, Room New York)

Digitization is bringing about a fundamental change in mobility and the automotive industry. One of the greatest challenges of our time is to continue providing functional mobility. The growing volume of traffic needs the best possible organization for the spaces available. One option is the seamless linking of different modes of transport. Furthermore, intelligent traffic control in real time will be essential in view of the increasing volume of traffic. Driver assistance systems, automated driving, connecting vehicles and the infrastructure will play a key role in tackling these tasks.

Guided Tours

IAA offers two-hour guided tours twice every day. Four different themed walking tours will be available. They will start at 10 h and 14 h (in German in the morning and in English in the afternoon), with a maximum of 25 participants. Trained guides will take the tours to visit up to six exhibitors. This will give participants a unique opportunity to obtain a compact and targeted overview of what’s on offer in their particular fields of interest and to make contact with experts from the relevant exhibitors.

Tour 1 (Connected Vehicle) presents products and services surrounding connected vehicles, connected drivers and connected loads. The topic of connectivity also includes infotainment, driver assistance systems and modern fleet management.

Tour 2 (Automated Driving) shows solutions and offerings for automated driving, including platooning (convoys of trucks) and driving in congestion. This tour will also showcase ideas for better management of stationary traffic such as automated parking and automated loading and unloading.

Tour 3: (Alternative Powertrains) is concerned with alternative powertrains, including electric vans and buses, natural gas powertrains, diesel for heavy goods vehicles and hydrogen or fuel cell systems. The tour will also cover innovative tank and charging infrastructure solutions.

Tour 4 (Urban Logistics & Transport Services) focuses on challenges and their solutions in the fields of freight and passenger transport, intermodality and combined transport, the last mile, logistics hubs, long-distance/urban buses, and seamless transport. Covers new services such as apps and freight exchanges, plus innovative offerings from and for forwarders, stock control and logistics.

Those interested can register for the themed tours in advance of the IAA Commercial Vehicles, at: www.iaa.de/programm/guided-tours. A fee will be charged (15 euros per person).
