SEG Automotive, a global leader in automotive technology solutions, has unveiled an extensive portfolio of electrification technologies aimed at revolutionizing mobility in India and beyond. The company’s strategic shift from a traditional hardware manufacturer to a cutting-edge mechatronics firm places it at the forefront of sustainable mobility solutions, with an emphasis on high-voltage systems and Light Electric Mobility (LEM) solutions for two-, three-, and four-wheeled vehicles.

The unveiling highlights SEG Automotive’s ambitious plans to cater to the growing demand for electrification. The company has developed a versatile platform for passenger and commercial vehicles, capable of handling up to 800 volts and 300 kilowatts, offering customers a choice between individual components like stators and rotors, or complete system solutions.

With an emphasis on both traditional and electric mobility, SEG Automotive continues to lead the market in ICE technologies through its innovative products, ensuring a strong presence in both the conventional and electrified automotive sectors. As part of its global strategy, the company has embraced a “Last Man Standing” approach for ICE, positioning itself to be a key player in the market’s transition from internal combustion engines to electrification.

“We are excited to lead the charge in electrification with a comprehensive product portfolio that positions us at the forefront of sustainable mobility,” said Mr. Ferdinando Sorrentino, Global CEO of SEG Automotive. “To drive future growth, we are re-orienting ourselves with an ‘outside-in’ market approach under our #NewJourney strategy, enabling us to offer tailored solutions to different regions through global synergies.”

Mr. Anil Kumar MR, Managing Director of SEG Automotive, shared his excitement about the company’s future in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electrified technologies. “While we have established market leadership with our innovative ICE products, our commitment to electrification is equally strong,” he said. “We aim to continue this success in the electrification space, striving to become one of the top players in both product and system solutions.”

A Commitment to Transformation

SEG Automotive’s commitment to sustainable mobility is reflected in its strategic transformation. The company is expanding beyond traditional automotive solutions, with a diverse portfolio that includes high-voltage electrification, LEM solutions, and e-bike technologies. The company also aims to be a one-stop solution provider for automotive startups and established OEMs, offering in-house software solutions for vehicle platform design, simulation, and end-to-end services.

India is a key growth market for SEG Automotive, particularly in light electromobility (LEM). “India is a growth opportunity, and we’ve seen tremendous growth, especially post-COVID,” said Mr. Anil Kumar MR. SEG is expanding into high-voltage solutions like Electric Line Circuit Breakers (ELCBs), positioning itself for the EV revolution in India.

The company’s strategy aligns with the increasing demand for energy-efficient solutions in India’s automotive sector, where alternators play a crucial role. “Our alternators have an efficiency of up to 70%, compared to the standard 60-65%,” notes Mr. Sorrentino. “The higher the efficiency, the lower the emissions, which helps in complying with CAFC norms.

“India is a growing market, and the solutions we develop here are not just for India—they have the potential to influence global markets,” said Mr. Sorrentino, underscoring the importance of the Indian market in SEG’s global strategy. With India currently accounting for 18% of SEG’s sales, the company expects this share to surpass 20% in the near future.

Manufacturing Excellence in India

SEG Automotive has strategically positioned its manufacturing operations in India across three key locations: Bangalore, Hosur, and Hassan. These plants are equipped to meet both domestic and global demands. The Bangalore facility produces starters and alternators, while Hosur focuses on electrification components, and Hassan supports various automotive solutions. “We are well-equipped for scalability, utilizing synergies from our global capacities to manage fluctuations in demand and capitalize on opportunities,” Mr. Anil stated.

The company’s strong market presence in India can be attributed to its deep expertise in electric rotating machines, a core competence SEG has developed over the past century. “Our ability to deliver millions of high-quality products with precision is one of our core strengths,” Mr. Sorrentino said, emphasizing the company’s role as a key player in both traditional and electrified systems.

Transitioning to Electrification

While the automotive industry transitions from ICE to electric vehicles, SEG Automotive is balancing its presence in both sectors. The company’s strategy involves maintaining a strong position in ICE technologies while scaling up its electrification efforts. “Our strategy is to maintain a balanced approach to both ICE and electrification,” Mr. Anil noted. SEG expects electric vehicles to account for 30 to 40% of its revenue in the medium to long term.

The rise of electric vehicles (EVs) is still met with some skepticism, especially in regions where infrastructure gaps persist. “The future is electrification, but the speed of adoption will depend on the ecosystem,” Mr. Sorrentino explained. While China’s electrification is supported by robust infrastructure, Europe and India face unique challenges and opportunities. In India, light electromobility, particularly in two- and three-wheelers, is seeing rapid growth, driven by improvements in battery technology and supportive incentives.

Mr. Anil observed, “The market for two-wheelers and three-wheelers is growing rapidly, and electrification is becoming more viable due to advancements in battery technology and government incentives.”

SEG’s Role in India’s Growth

India’s rapidly growing economy and automotive sector present a major opportunity for SEG Automotive. The company’s local expertise is a significant advantage, particularly in light electromobility. “India is set to become the third-largest automotive market by 2030, and SEG is perfectly positioned to lead this transformation,” said Mr. Anil, highlighting the importance of the Indian market in SEG’s growth strategy.

The shift towards greener mobility in India, driven by regulatory pressures and incentives for EVs, provides SEG Automotive with the perfect opportunity to expand its electrification solutions. SEG is focused on providing innovative solutions, ranging from traditional ICE systems to advanced electrification technologies, including its work with e-rickshaws and two- and three-wheelers.

“India’s automotive future will be shaped by cleaner, greener mobility solutions, and SEG is committed to supporting this transformation,” Mr. Anil added, reflecting the company’s forward-looking approach to the evolving automotive landscape.

SEG Automotive is set to drive innovation and growth, focusing on electrification, light electromobility, and sustainable solutions for both Indian and global markets. With strategic investments in India and cutting-edge technologies, the company is shaping the future of mobility. Both Mr. Anil Kumar MR and Mr. Ferdinando Sorrentino highlight SEG’s agility and adaptability, ensuring its leadership in both traditional and electrified automotive sectors.

“We are excited to be part of the mobility journey,” Mr. Anil concluded, underlining the company’s ambition to lead the charge in the global automotive industry.

SEG’s Strategic Vision for the Future

SEG Automotive is focused on maintaining its leadership in both traditional and electrified solutions through its “Fast Forward 2025” strategy. This includes strengthening its 12-volt base, advancing high-voltage technologies, and bridging with 48-volt solutions. “We want to be the company that produces the last starter and the last generator,” said Mr. Sorrentino, reflecting SEG’s future vision.

SEG is also ramping up its efforts in aftermarket services, recognizing the diverse needs of different regions. “We expect consistent growth in the aftermarket business, which will contribute significantly to our sales targets,” Mr. Sorrentino added, emphasizing the company’s commitment to providing comprehensive solutions across all segments of the automotive industry.

The company aims to double its sales to over €3 billion by 2030, with a strong focus on market needs and continuous innovation. “Our target is clear—to be the leader in both traditional and electrified automotive sectors,” concluded Mr. Sorrentino.
