In an exclusive discussion with MOTORINDIA, Li Jian, Managing Director, SHIG India, said: “We are one of the few companies who have got complete solutions for the powertrain with engine, gearboxes and axles with in-house manufacturing that has achieved a reputation with our branded products like Baudouin – Power gensets, Linde – Hydraulics, Asiastar – Buses, Fastgear – Gearboxes, Hande – Axles, and other commercial vehicle, construction and earthmoving engines under Weichai. We are also the largest manufacturer of diesel and gas engines in the world. The powertrain you see here is our gas-powered system. We are equipped to offer that as well as meet the BS-VI norms with various combinations and applications.”

SHIG India has a manufacturing facility in Pune and is focused on serving its customer base with the high-end engineering products and services representing the group in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives & Nepal. Jian added: “In India, we are strong on the marine engines business with more than 50 per cent market share. Our engines are proven and have operated round the clock. Power generation is the second segment where we are extremely competent. Now we are also focusing on earthmoving, truck and bus segments with our gearbox, axles and hydraulics.”

The company claims to have strong solutions for the EC bus segment. “We are very strong in the EV bus segment and have two production facilities in China. We have already started supplying CKD kits of complete chassis with electric motor and system to our partners in India. Only the body is constructed locally,” he said.

The group has engines ranging from 200 to 3000 horsepower which can power various containers ships worldwide. SHIG has also got engines for power gensets (high-end engines) from 82.5 KVA to 2500 KVA. “We roll out approximately 800,000 engines per annum out of which 400,000 are common-rail engines. Around 3,000 to 4,000 of our common-rail engines are already running in the market. Today, our total engine population running in the India market from power generation, earthmoving equipment and CVs is around 90,000 and these range from 40 to 400 kw.”

Moving forward, as SHIG India focuses on trucks and buses, it is confident of retaining its leadership position in the marine segment and is ready to expand the capacity at its Pune plant. “Capacity is not a constraint for us. Right now, we are catering to higher hp engines from 200 to 600 hp and within three years we should reach a number of 10,000 units. Also, by 2020, we will have our R&D center ready in Pune with 60 to 100 employees who will be working on CEV 4, CPCB4 plus and other application engineering for Indian requirements. This development shall help us not only to meet the Indian requirement but also cater to neighboring markets such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Maldives and African countries,” asserted the MD.
