A report on Smart Urban Mobility, commissioned by the IRU-initiated All India Smart Move High Level Group and produced by the Institute of Urban Transport, has laid out clear recommendations to create a sustainable, integrated transport system for India.
The report recommendations focus on removing the existing barriers and facilitating urban mobility in India, with the aim to substantially increase the use of collective passenger transport by 2030. It calls for the introduction of Bus Rapid Transit systems, better regulation and significant investment in infrastructure.
Mr. Michael Nielsen, IRU General Delegate, said: “This report highlights the major challenges that India faces in developing a sustainable transport system for the future. Only by bringing together key professionals from private industry, decision makers, academics and transport stakeholders can we both identify these needs and push for their implementation”.
Dr. Kulwant Singh, Regional Advisor for UN-HABITAT, said: “Urban mobility is a crucial part of making cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. I welcome the report’s recommendations and the challenges it lays before us. I want to see more integrated and sustainable transport systems in Indian cities”.
