The new generation truck cabin epitomizes modern and international looks, with improved comfort and drivability, along with standard fitment of next-gen telematics system.
The Punjab-based SML Isuzu (SMLI) appeared jubilant like never before at this year’s show. The event marked the unveiling of the all-new, next-generation range of light and intermediate truck models named ‘Global Series’ (GS) with refreshed cabin to meet the changing demands of the market. The new Isuzu-inspired cabin replaces the quintessential Mazda cab design that the brand is holding on to for its entire truck range since inception of the company in 1984.
Speaking at the launch event, SML Isuzu’s MD & CEO, Mr. Eiichi Seto, said that Auto Expo is the right platform to introduce new products and interact with a wide range of customers. “This time, we are here with new products for the domestic market in both cargo and passenger segments that are tailor made for changing customer demands, also keeping pace with technological evolution”, he stated.
Three new trucks displayed at the motor show were Samrat GS HD19, Sartaj GS CNG with turbocharger and intercooler, and Samrat GS Tipper chassis powered by an improved 85 kW (400 Nm) engine, 5-speed gearbox (with air-operated clutch booster), and 13-inch rear-axle differential.
The company also introduced the CNG-variant of the ‘Executive LX’ tourist and staff application AC bus powered by a turbo-charged 80 kW engine for improved performance on par with diesel. It claims that the key design and engineering improvements in all the newly-launched products are carried out to suit the unique requirements of the Indian market.
‘Made in India’ trucks
Asked about the new ‘Global Series’, Mr. Seto exclaimed that the new truck range combines the Japanese technology and global expertise of Isuzu and the reliability and economy of the SML products. “They offer best-in-class fuel efficiency, improved driver comfort and drivability, higher uptime and superior reliability, and optimum loading capacity, along with lower maintenance costs”.
Apart from the refreshingly new front styling with large and clear headlamps, Isuzu grille design, elongated side-view mirrors and bigger side windows, the front chassis frame underneath has been reworked in the Global Series. The frontal multi leaf-spring suspension has been tweaked to offer better ride quality, while improved seating position with tiltable centre seat offers great comfort inside. The company also claims that significant improvements are made in terms of NVH proofing and durability of the cab.
Inside the cabin, the dashboard layout is totally revamped to suit the modern needs of the buyers. The new two-spoke steering wheel and the instrumentation cluster is top-notch, thanks to its multi-functionalities, including the on-board driver information display that offers all vehicular data from odo reading to engine fault codes with error description. Optional air-conditioning feature is available for the buyers to choose, while blowers are part of the standard fitment.
Commenting on the new truck cabin, Mr. Nawal Kumar Sharma, General Manager – Corporate Marketing and CRPM, observed that the on-board features and improved material quality are simply ‘car-like’. “We were working on the new truck range for past 1.5 years. Although design is Japanese, all the aggregates that go into the truck are locally sourced and assembled in India. The engineering improvisation and material selection were all thoughtfully laid out for domestic requirements, making it a true “Made in India” product on global standards”, he observed.
He also disclosed that the new cabin will gradually replace the entire truck range. With the development of appropriate vacuum-assisted hydraulic braking system, the Global Series cabins will be extended for the LCV trucks as well, even may take up the styling of standard LCV buses in future, he added.
Next-gen telematics
Developed in partnership with Minda iConnect, SMLI launched the advanced telematics solution ‘SAARTHI’ at Auto Expo. Aimed at revolutionizing fleet management and 24×7 on-road service support already offered by the company, the SAARTHI takes the vehicle management system and on-board connectivity to a whole new level. It supports real-time vehicle tracking, dashboard analytics, SOS, Live tab, Alert Tab, and report retrieval.
“With a mobile application, the driver can contact the nearest service station and receive service help anywhere anytime across the country with a touch of a button”, claimed Mr. Sharma. The technology will bring in more customer engagement, while also helping to gain better value in insurance and financing proposals. SML SAARTHI devices are installed on all Global Series trucks, and will be standardized in all bus models from April this year, according to the manufacturer.
“Our mission is to enhance the engagement and experience of customers, who support us with their phenomenal faith in our products. We are keeping ourselves updated with advanced technologies and changing buyers preferences, evident from the newly launched products”, said an optimistic Mr. Eiichi Seto, who quoted his company’s slogan “Be the Best, Be the One” to drive his point.
