Thermo King Leads the Charge in Electrifying the Cold Chain Industry at IAA 2024

On the opening day of IAA Transportation 2024 show in Hannover, Germany, Thermo King®, a leader in transport temperature control solutions and a brand of Trane Technologies, is advancing the future of commercial transport by unveiling a lineup of solutions designed to accelerate the industry’s shift towards electrification, whilst meeting the traditional transport refrigeration needs of commercial customers.

The Thermo King IAA 2024 reveal showcases new models in the E-Series electric transport refrigeration unit portfolio for small to large trucks, and the electric Advancer-e Spectrum multi-temperature trailer refrigeration unit, alongside digital and power management solutions designed to power and enhance performance. This includes continuous success of the Thermo King AxlePower energy recovery and management system, as well as Energ-e and E-COOLPAC battery solutions.

“Our fully electric and hybrid product lineup at the IAA marks another pivotal moment following the fulfilment of our commitment to deliver electric products in every segment of the cold chain by 2023,” said Claudio Zanframundo, president Thermo King EMEA Truck, Trailer, Bus and Global Marine, Rail, Air. “Our investments in electrification, hybridisation and digitalisation propel the transformation of the cold chain, setting new benchmarks for efficiency and sustainability. We are leading the change with solutions that meet the dual demands of environmental responsibility and operational excellence. This vision fuels our innovation delivering exceptional value to our customers and the planet.”

IAA 2024 premiere – Electrifying trailer refrigeration with multi-temp flexibility

Thermo King Advancer-e Spectrum multi-temperature units mark a significant milestone in sustainable, all-electric trailer refrigeration. The A-500e Spectrum model offers unparalleled flexibility allowing for precise multi-zone temperature control across various cargo types, responding to the needs of complex delivery routes with varying temperature settings. The engineless, advanced design of the Advancer-e Spectrum not only ensures whisper-quiet, emission-free operations, perfect for urban and late-night deliveries, but also significantly enhances fleet efficiency through fast pulldown and rapid temperature recovery.

The unit is compatible with multiple power sources, including AxlePower self-charging energy recovery system, E-COOLPAC or Energ-e battery-packs, and truck ePTO’s. This ensures Advancer-e is future-proof and provides fleets with a robust, adaptable trailer refrigeration solution that meets today’s needs while preparing for tomorrow’s challenges.

IAA 2024 premiere – The best in electric performance for large trucks

The introduction of Thermo King Large Truck E-Series units, with a full offering of high cooling capacity models in both single and multi-temperature configurations, represents a leap forward in the electric refrigeration for trucks between 7.5–26 tonnes. Engineered to deliver unparalleled efficiency and sustainability, these units enhance operational capabilities on both battery electric (BEV) and engine-powered (ICE) vehicles, and can also operate independently, powered by the E-COOLPAC battery pack.

Purpose-built technology ensures the most efficient use of electric power. The units are equipped with advanced HVDC connections and inverter technology and feature variable speed control for optimal cooling capacity and energy efficiency. This translates to superior performance and precise temperature control achieved with minimal impact on the vehicle’s range, fuel consumption or operational costs.

Real-time connectivity is a standard feature of all Large Truck E-Series units, providing fleet managers with detailed insights into operational efficiency through telematics.

The units’ robust design reduces maintenance requirements with fewer moving parts, while low-noise, no emissions and slimmest profile in their category makes E-Series ideal for the lowest-height trucks operating in urban environments.

IAA 2024 premiere – Made for a new, modern and all-electric last mile

Catering specifically to vans and light commercial vehicles up to 12m3, the new Thermo King E-100e and E-200e units stand out in the market. Their robust, compact, lightweight, full-aluminium design reduces weight and maintenance costs while ensuring easy installation across various vehicle types.

The new E-200e, offers best-in-class cooling capacity, improved performance and reliability thanks to its innovative reverse cycle heat pump technology. Additionally, the E-100e and
E-200e units feature smart controls that optimise compressor speed based on ambient and box conditions, enhancing energy efficiency and performance.

The complete Thermo King E-Series offers fully electric, zero direct emissions and low-noise refrigeration for both BEV and ICE vehicles. Prioritising efficiency, sustainability, and flexibility, the units feature advanced connectivity to optimise performance and reduce operational costs. Their powerful and constant cooling capacity, rapid pulldown and quick temperature recovery are all independent of the vehicle’s engine speed. Holdover ability also maintains precise temperature control even when the driver is not operating the vehicle.

“Our 2024 IAA showcase highlights the latest in electrified transport refrigeration and our commitment to delivering tangible benefits for our customers’ and their entire fleet lifecycle,” said Claudio Zanframundo.

“AxlePower, now launched across EMEA, is a prime example. This technology can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 12 tonnes per year for distribution trailers. AxlePower-ed trailers have covered over 950,000 km, generating over 46,500 kWh while on the road. Many of them, in very cold to hot ambient conditions from the north of Europe to South Africa, have relied solely on this power generation system without needing shore power. And that’s just a glimpse of what’s already on the road,” said Claudio Zanframundo.

“Thermo King’s dedication goes beyond just equipment. – We provide a full suite of services to maximise uptime, sustainability, savings, and operational control. From connectivity to manage fleets and cargo from anywhere, to customizable service agreements, performance upgrades, and 24/7 support of our global dealer network, we keep our customers’ vehicles not only on the road, but performing at their best,” concluded Claudio Zanframundo.
