UMI’13 deliberations cover all aspects of urban transport growth

The sixth Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference-cum-Exhibition 2013, promoted by the Ministry of Urban Development, was held in New Delhi from December 3 to 6.

Inaugurated by Mr. Kamal Nath, Minister of Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs, UMI 13, with its theme “Transforming Cities with UMI-pic-2Transportation”, attracted more than 60 international participants and delegates from 26 States across India. There were over 65 presentations by national and international speakers and over 30 research papers presented by research scholars and students on various topics. The four-day conference consisted of three panel discussions, 10 technical sessions, 13 round-table discussions and eight research symposiums.

The discussions covered important topics such as the need for effective and efficient urban transport system, pedestrian safety or pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, fuel efficiency and emission guidelines for buses, parking policies, freight management, modal shift in favour of bus transport, planning and design for sustainable urban mobility, green mobility, and so on.

Mr. Enrique Penalosa, President, ITDP & Ex-Mayor, Bagota, in his keynote address, highlighted the importance of footpaths in a city, which is a part of its transport system, and lack of quality footpaths in Indian cities.

UMI-pic-1The UMI Conference with the Expo is an annual event with the theme covering all the aspects of urban mobility. Its main objective is to bring together urban transport professionals and officials in the country as well as international experts to enable them to share their views and experiences. The conference is marked by interactions and discussions around case studies to help the cities, whose officials attend the conference, in keeping themselves up to date with the best urban transport practices.
