Up to 1,55,000 commercial vehicle drivers in India are currently wearing VisionSpring glasses to see hazards on the road and reduce the risk of accidents
Clear vision being a crucial component for making roads safer for all, VisionSpring supported the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in its road safety efforts during the Road Safety Month from January 18 to February 17, 2021. Eyeglasses are a simple and scalable way to improve road safety. One of the company’s key themes – ‘see to be safe’ – corrects the vision of drivers, long-haul truckers and transit hub workers. “By bringing vision screenings and eyeglass distribution to highway rest stops and transportation hubs, we are reaching drivers on the move,” the company said.
Up to 1,55,000 commercial vehicle drivers in India are currently wearing VisionSpring glasses to see hazards on the road and reduce the risk of accidents. The company collaborated with Piaggio Vehicles (P) Ltd. and Safeway Concessions to provide easy access to eyeglasses and eye care services to drivers on the move and is continuing to reach truck, bus and cab and auto drivers. Further, in partnership with VisionSpring, Shell India contributes by providing easy access to eyeglasses and eye care services to long-haul drivers and transport workers across India. The ‘Drive Safe India’ campaign started in 2019 and has reached 2,10,000 drivers and dispensed 1,36,000 eyeglasses across India.
Under the campaign, drivers receive vision screenings, low-cost eyeglasses and referrals for other eye conditions. The company invited Ekta Kumar, Country Lead-CSR, Shell India, to speak to the team on the importance of road safety. Kumar has been leading the campaign for commercial drivers for the last three years and supports them to see better and drive safer. “In 2021 we have so far screened over 32,000 drivers and distributed over 20,000 eyeglasses at various locations across India. We are proud to contribute to the Government of India’s commitment to decrease road accidents and associated deaths by 50% before 2025,” the company stated.
