cent in the current year. York has
always had strong presence in the
heavy duty segment for over four to
five decades. For instance, it has a
commanding 80-85 per cent market
share in Indonesia in the heavy duty
mining segment.
Mr. Balasubramaniamsaid: “Prod-
ucts in the heavy duty category such
as 17.5-ton axles, 15-ton suspen-
sions and 15-ton axles are difficult
to replicate, making it challenging
for unbranded players in the market.
The last 12 months have witnessed
significant engineering work, R&D
and product development at York.
The R&D is directed from Singa-
pore while the work is carried out in
India, through the R&D department
at Pune.”
The company’s new plant at Tale-
gaon, Pune, is currently its highest
capacity plant capable of producing
50,000 axles when functional in two
shifts in one production line. The ca-
pacity is set to be doubled in 2014-
15 owing to the continuous increase
in demand. York’s manufacturing
footprint includes facilities at Pune,
Jamshedpur, Singapore, Shanghai
and Australia, of which the Jam-
shedpur plant’s production will be
gradually moved to the one at Pune
which is the largest.
It is interesting to note that though
the Indian market has not grown in
the last few months, York has sig-
nificantly increased its market share.
The company also has plans to ex-
pand the capacity of its Shanghai
plant to keep pace with the growing
demands in the region.
York is a 100 per cent supplier to
Tata Motors, and discussions are on
with other vehicle manufacturers,
including Ashok Leyland, MAN,
Daimler and Navistar. Commenting
on the widespread speculation about
a slowdown in the commercial vehi-
cle industry, he said: “The long-term
market is definitely good. There was
a lot of scepticism about the market
before the Auto Expo, but here when
I talk to fleet operators, nobody is
talking about slowdown, they are all
talking about ordering.”
